Amanda Chi

CELLO

Taiwanese-Canadian cellist and educator Amanda Chi has studied and performed internationally since the age of seven. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and a Master of Musical Arts degree from Yale University, where she studied with Paul Watkins of the Emerson String Quartet. Amanda has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, and she is a frequent substitute musician with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company.

Amanda began her musical studies on piano before moving to Toronto at age eleven, where she received a scholarship to the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. She studied cello with David Hetherington and continued her piano studies with Li Wang of the Glenn Gould School. In 2013, she became the youngest cello prize winner of the 8th Toronto Sinfonietta Concerto Competition. As a chamber musician, Amanda has collaborated with artists including Frank Huang and Cynthia Phelps and worked with composers such as Helen Grime and Sebastian Currier.

With 10 years of teaching experience in both cello and piano, Amanda is passionate about helping students develop strong technical and musical foundations while fostering confidence and a lifelong love of music. She holds her RCM Level 10 Piano Certificate with First Class Honours and completed Suzuki teacher training for cello Books 1–3 during her time at The Juilliard School. Her students have received awards and prizes in music competitions. Amanda currently performs on a 2019 cello made by Andrew Carruthers of Santa Rosa, California.
